How to use Split Excel by column

Split a spreadsheet into separate XLSX files by the values in a selected column. Review the groups and download a ZIP.

When to use this tool

A Customer column with 12 North rows and 8 South rows produces two workbooks, each with its own header row.

Choose files and settings

Choose a file and sheet → Select the grouping column → Review groups and save ZIP. Keep the original files until you have checked the output.

Before you save

Empty values form their own group. Spaces and letter case are distinct unless you enable normalization.

Supported features and limits

The header is copied to each group. Empty values are placed in an Unspecified group. Conflicting output filenames receive a number. Cell values are not changed. Values are saved as text cells. Original formatting, macros, charts, and formula recalculation are not supported. Each sheet supports up to 50,000 rows, 200 columns, and 1 million cells; selected input files support up to 2 million cells in total.

Check the result

Compare input and output row counts. Check leading zeros, blank values, and unmatched rows. Formatting and recalculated formulas are not part of the output.
